Administrators Discount Others’ Salaries And Protect Their Own

HAVANA, August 18 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) – Secondary school teachers in Aguada de Pasajeros, Villa Clara province in central Cuba, will be paid in July of next year the equivalent of three days’ salary that had been discounted from their pay by municipal department of education administrators.

After a massive protest by the teachers, the administrators decided to reinstate the amount previously discounted, effective at the end of next school year. The officials gave as their explanation for the discount that the teachers don’t work the full year.

The teachers argued that they are only paid for eight hours a day, and that they have never been paid for the twenty-four hours a day that they work during the period known as the "school in the countryside," in which students and teachers work and live in the fields for three weeks.

The discounted paychecks applied only to the teachers; administrative personnel and school principals were not included in the measure.
