President of Independent Physicians in Santiago de Cuba Harassed

HAVANA, August 18 (Ricardo González Alfonso) – Officers of the department of State Security visited Dr. Ángel Jiménez Ojeda on August 16 because he had linked his assailants in a recent incident with that department.

Jiménez, 55, is the president of the Independent Medical Association in Santiago de Cuba.

On August 3, Jiménez was on his way to Havana when he was assaulted by two youths who beat him after trying to provoke an argument with him. Jiménez blames State Security for the confrontation. "I insist it is significant that they knew full well who I was, they beat me and didn’t attempt to rob me," said Jiménez, who has been harassed by the political police several times on account of his activities with dissident groups.
