RIO DE JANEIRO: Cuba is to help a mosquito-ridden state of Brazil set up a laboratory to make a "biolarvicide" to combat dengue fever and malaria, Amazonas state's governor said Tuesday.
Malaria has reached critical levels in Amazonas, Governor Amazonino Mendes told reporters upon arrival from a trip to Havana, where the plan was developed.
He said the laboratory would cost the equivalent of some $7 million.
Cuba will be responsible for 40 percent of the project, especially its technological aspects, while Amazonas' state government will cover 50 percent, and the remaining ten percent will come from the private sector, Mendes said.
Brazil currently imports the biolarvicide from Cuba, the only country that produces it.
But the laboratory will enable Amazonas to supply the rest of Brazil and other Latin American countries, Mendes said.(AFP)
