Authorities Concerned At The Start Of The Coffee Harvest In Pinar del Río

PINAR DEL RÍO, August 15 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) – The authorities’ main concern at the start of the coffee harvest in Pinar del Río province is how to prevent the high volume of pilferage characteristic of recent harvests.

Officials say they need to take extreme measures because of the significant quantities of the product that typically is diverted to the black market, in which there is always high demand for coffee.

The primary suspects in the diversions are the agricultural workers and the residents of the coffee-producing areas. The coffee crop is considered extremely important by the government because of its potential for generating hard currency.
