HAVANA, August 10 (Moraima Pires, Grupo Decoro) Bakers are working up to 16-hour days in several bakeries in Havana due to the scarcity of utensils they have to work with.
"Production plans for bread remain the same and every day more trays break, which worsens the conditions in which we have to work," said Alberto La Enhs, a baker. Having to work with fewer trays means more sessions in the oven to meet production quotas.
La Enhs said that workers cannot complain because managers label them "counter revolutionary workers" or "traitors to the motherland" and they run the risk of being fired.
The bakers typically earn about 200 pesos (less than 10 dollars) a month. "The bakers dont know where to take their complaints," said La Enhs. In several instances, they have raised their concerns to the Cuban Workers Union, a government entity, and they have essentially received
a speech similar to that of the managers of the bakeries they work in.
