PINAR DEL RIO, August 8 (Rafael Contreras) The director of one of Cuba's better known manufacturers of fruit preserves was tried and convicted here and for corruption, but the only punishment meted out to Campos has been the loss of his job.
Pedro Campos, director of La Conchita, a factory canning fruit and fruit products for export, was accused and found guilty of abusing his position, corruption, and diverting State resources for personal and illegal ends.
The prosecution presented evidence that Campos had a suite at the tourist resort of La Güira, nearby, where he would entertain his friends and lovers.
In exchange for the use of the suite, he regularly gave the director of the resort products from the factory. So far, the only punishment meted out to Campos has been the loss of his job.
Until now, he was considered one of the "untouchables" in the Party hierarchy in Pinar del Río province, western Cuba.
