Blind Dissident Denied Means To Work

HAVANA, August 4 (Regina del Sol) - Sergio Díaz Laffastegui could work in the Academy of Sciences if he could use a computer specially adapted for the blind. Cuba’s National Association for the Blind will not allow him access to one of its foreign-donated computers because Díaz is a dissident.

Díaz is a Bachelor in English and a diplomate in language from the Alliance Française, but hasn’t been allowed to work in ten years. He says he has possibilities in a department at the Academy of Sciences, but would need the use of a special computer. He addressed his request for the machine to the president of the National Association for the Blind, Armando González Landa, but was turned down. The computers were donated to the Cuban blind from abroad.
