HAVANA, August 3 (Ohalys Victore, Cuba Voz) - Joana González Herrera, 32, was stabbed yesterday at a friends house by her estranged husband, Roberto Peraza Fontela, and died shortly afterwards.
Peraza, 34, had just been released from jail recently. He showed up at the home of Katia Domenech yesterday, where he stabbed his wife three times. He is now at the Capri police station, facing murder charges.
González had gone to the police numerous times asking for protection from her husband, Miriam Cantillo, a neighbor who knew her said, but police ridiculed her fears. According to Cantillo, Peraza regularly beat her and threatened her. She is survived by her children, two girls and a boy,
aged 15, 13, and 8, respectively.
González was a director of the Democratic Workers Confederation of Cuba, a labor organization independent of the Cuban government. In that capacity, she was systematically harassed by officers of the Department of State Security; who repeatedly arrested, interrogated and threatened
her. Cantillo said her status as a dissident contributed to police ignoring her pleas for protection from her husband.
