Irregularities on the rise due to food shortage

HAVANA, April 25 (Amarilis Cortina Rey, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - Irregularities revolving around food production and especially distribution are on the increase in Managua, in the Havana municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, due to chronic shortages.

The manager and a cashier in a local bakery were fired after they organized a net of clandestine peddlers who sold part of the production of bread destined for residents.

The bread, in the form of 80-gram buns, was taken out of the bakery in regular bags by the peddlers, who sold them at one peso each. These buns are rationed at the rate of one bun per person per day.

The manager derived the thickest slice of the profits from the illegal activity. He, like almost every one in a similar position, is a Communist Party member and had been adjudged trustworthy.

Isabel Rivero, 60, was arrested after officers searched her home and found an undetermined amount of coffee. The search was prompted by an informer; Rivero was fined 1,500 pesos.

A man was arrested for transporting three cheeses he had made. Police accused him of trying to sell them and confiscated them.

A woman who witnessed the arrest said, "the police are going to eat those cheeses now."
