HAVANA, April 22 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba- Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - The
sanitary situation in the Cuban capital has not improved in spite of a recent
ampaign to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquito which the government has called
a success.
Residents of the Boyeros, Diez de Octubre, and Arroyo Naranjo municipalities
say there are plenty of mosquitoes in those areas which the public health
authorities are not addressing.
"When I asked a family doctor why the Ministry of Public Health was not
spraying here, he said 'These are not Aedes aegypti, so they are not dangerous'"
said a resident of Luyanó, in Diez de Octubre municipality.
Waste water is also a problem. In centric, upscale Vedado, one house's waste
water constantly flows down L Street, past some of the choicest real estate in
the city, including the Coppelia ice cream parlor and the La Roca restaurant.
