CAMAGÜEY, April 19 (Normando Hernández, CPIC / www.cubanet.org)
- Roaming rodents have been known to eat the patients' food at the 'Guillermo
Domínguez' hospital in Puerto Padre municipality, Las Tunas province.
"I panicked when I saw a rat eating the bread I had been given for
breakfast," said Edelia Hernández, 66.
"It is common for rodents to eat the patients' food when they look away
or go to the bathroom. The rat that took my bread walked away calmly, as if it
didn't feel threatened by proximity to people," Hernández said.
Alfredo Domínguez Batista, a human rights activist who investigates
mistreatment at the hospital, said that at the 'Guillermo Domínguez'
patients are exposed to rodents, as well as to flies, mosquitoes and
cockroaches.
"The bed linens given to the patients are often bloody, torn, or dirty.
Many refuse to use them, and those that can, bring their own from home," he
said.
Domínguez added that in spite of recent repairs to the plumbing,
patients have to provide their own buckets to bathe, because there is no water
in the bathrooms.
Reportedly, the 'Guillermo Domínguez' is not an exception. There are
similar complaints against other hospitals in the province.
