CAMAGÜEY, October 2 (Leopoldo Marín, CPIC / CubaNet) - Fifteen
newly- minted teachers were paid 70 pesos, or 3.18 dollars at the current
exchange rate, for their first month teaching computing in Vertientes, Camagüey
province.According to the Municipal Education Directorate, they can expect to
keep earning the same salary for the coming months, because they were trained in
what are called here "emergency courses," a program to supply the
critical demand for teachers caused, at least in part, by the low salaries
prevalent in the profession.
The teachers work eight hours a day, teach some classes on Saturdays and
Sundays, and have additional responsibilities.
"History will repeat itself," said a retired teacher. "These
teachers will also leave the field at the first opportunity."
