HAVANA, May 16 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI) Five slaughterhouses have
been shut down in the city of Havana recently, leaving hundreds out of work.
The last slaughterhouse to close, the "Antonio Maceo," in the
Lawton district, left more than a hundred out of work on May 7. An unspecified
number of workers at the meat-products processing plant known as "Planta
Habana," which makes animal feed, and a number of leather tanners at
another facility, were also laid off.
The only facility now left operating is a newly-built one in Havana
province, outside the city. What is not immediately clear is whether the plant
closings and lay-offs reflect increased productivity in the new plant or
foretell a contraction in the volume of meat that will be available in the Cuban
capital.
According to employees of the now-closed plants, the better cuts of meat
extracted in them were destined to the hotels and other tourist installations,
and the lesser cuts went to markets meant for Cubans.
