PINAR DEL RIO, June 19 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - 120
neighborhoods, harboring hundreds of thousands of residents in Pinar del Río
province have been classified as unhealthy or marginal.
The greatest number of these are clustered in the provincial capital, and in
the Sandino, San Cristóbal, and Consolación del Sur
municipalities, although all 14 municipalities in the province have some
marginal areas.
The categorization is applied to areas with poor housing, deficient water,
sewer, and electrical services, poor roads and lack of other essential services.
"The most critical were chosen," said Cirilo González
Soler, a local official. There are hundreds of areas where present problems
could lead to the same status if they are not addressed in time.
González said that the 120 neighborhoods need urgent attention, but
material limitations are delaying work and no immediate solution is foreseen.
