SANTIAGO DE CUBA, June 18 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) - Public Health
officials prohibited the sale of meats last week at the producers' market in the
Santa Bárbara district of the city after discovering that dog meat was
being sold as mutton.
None of the sellers at the market would comment, but customers ratified the
story on condition their names were not used. The market, known locally as "mercado
Ferreiro" has not sold meat since last week; similar markets in other areas
of the city have continued selling it all along.
In this type of markets, private producers are allowed to sell their
produce, paying a percentage of their revenue to the government. The only meats
that may be sold are pork, fowl and mutton. Some here say dog meat is similar to
mutton, which presently is selling at 15 pesos a pound.
