HAVANA, July 27 (Luis Viño Zimerman, UPECI) Residents of Havana, who
look in the black market for goods they can't obtain any other way, are finding
the experience can sometimes turn out to be risky; the products are not always
all they are supposed to be.
"I bought deodorant in the black market and ended up with abscesses
under my arms. I had to have surgery and was out of work for six months,"
said Ricardo Fragoso Rivas, 28, a resident of the Juanelo district in the city.
"I bought talcum powder in the illegal market and it gave my
eight-month-old baby allergies," said Mervin Águila Moreno, 26, who
lives in the Vedado district.
A series of police raids recently revealed some of the risks inherent in the
illegal trade; authorities found storehouses of out-of-date medicines and
make-shift manufacturing facilities for deodorant that were using dangerous
ingredients.
