HAVANA, September 14 (Alida Viso Bello) The Municipal Tribunal No. 1 in the city of Santiago de Cuba fined dissident Adel Jiménez Cintra 200 pesos for "disobedience" by selling soft drinks without the proper license.
In a hearing that lasted two hours, the sector chief of the local police accused Jiménez, while the building was under surveillance by five officers of the Department of State Security.
Jiménez Cintra, 42, is the director of the independent library "José Mayía Rodríguez" in Santiago. As a dissident, he is not elegible for employment with any State enterprise since he is classified as "untrustworthy."
Self-employment licenses, such as the one Jiménez would need to sell soft drinks, are also routinely withheld from dissidents.
