Abortions Up In Guantánamo

HAVANA, September 14 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC) – In the eastern Cuban city of Guantánamo the number of abortions on young women is up, said Dr. Rolando Ramírez, a gynecologist in the city.

Ramírez said every week at least 20 abortions a day are performed, from Monday to Friday. "Fridays are the saddest days," he said, "because that’s the day they do the young ones, girls 13 and 14."

According to Ramírez, in 1999 there were 1,898 abortions performed, out of which 503 were done on teen-agers. In the first semester of this year, already 1,105 abortions had been performed, 354 of them on minors.
