SANTIAGO DE CUBA, September 7 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) Three physicians were arrested in an area known locally as "Ullao," near the perimeter of the U. S. Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay.
The three hold valid visas to enter the U. S. but the Cuban government will not issue them exit visas. A regulation of the Ministry of Public Health provides that physicians and health technicians serve from three to five years before being allowed to leave the country.
The three, Amarilis Katia Diez Presilla, 30; Eufemio Reyes Calderín, 33; and Ariel Valverde, 33, are being held in the State Security Operations Unit in Monte Sano, said Amarilis Presilla, mother of Dr. Diez.
Mrs. Presilla went to the detention center yesterday after she was notified by phone that her daughter had been arrested. The lieutenant in charge informed her that the three "were under investigation," and that she could see her daughter at the regular visiting schedule on the 12th.
She was allowed to leave some personal care items for Dr. Diez.
The lieutenant also told Mrs. Presilla that Ullao is a favorite jumping-off point from which to leave the country illegally, so that arrests of people without immediate business in the area are routine.
