Parents Steer Children Away From Teaching

HAVANA, August 31 (Manuel David Orrio, CPI) – The school year will start with a shortage of 700 teachers in Havana alone, as Cuban parents try to steer their children away from studying to become teachers, the minister of Education said here today.

Minister Luis Ignacio Gómez said over Havana radio that parents steer their children to professions other than teaching. "In some cases, they even forbid them" to study education. He added that the shortage of teachers will be filled by graduates in other specialties and by students.

Gómez did not offer reasons for the parents’reluctance, but generalized opinion holds that any profession other than teaching offers the opportunity for better pay, more prestige and more access to dollars.
