Havana Rife With Rumors About The Dismissal Of The Minister Of Education

HAVANA, August 30 (Pedro Nasco Alvarez, UPECI) – People who work in the Education Ministry are discussing persistent rumors about the imminent dismissal of the minister, Luis Ignacio Gómez. Some versions say that he has already been dismissed and that Fidel Castro is running the ministry.

Among the possible causes for the dismissal are mistreatment of subordinates and misinforming the Council of Ministers about the educational system’s readiness to start the school year in September.

Presumably the minister informed that 80 percent of the teachers available are fully qualified when in fact the number is much smaller due to desertion by many of the candidates who have been substituted by university students and professionals from other specialties.
