HAVANA, June 27 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) Political prisoner Miguel Sánchez Valiente managed to convey to Cuba-Verdad some information on conditions on the Combinado del Este prison east of Havana.
The prison consists of three four-story cell blocks, in addition to the National Inmate Hospital, the punishment cell block and administrative and operations buildings.
Political prisoners Francisco Chaviano, the brothers Galindo, a Cuban-Canadian and another prisoner are confined in Building No. 1. In Building No. 2, Charles Valdés Suárez is serving an 18-year sentence and Arturo Suárez Ramos a 30-year sentence. Sánchez Valiente is
also confined in this cell block.
In Building No. 3 are jailed Fidel Basulto, Tomás Ramos and two others who are said to have arrived at the island through the westernmost province of Pinar del Río and are awaiting trial. One of these is aged 25 and the other 69.
Iosvani Aguiar Camejo is on a hunger strike at the National Inmate Hospital. Sánchez says there are a number of political prisoners in the punishment cells, but their exact number is unknown. He says the political prisoners are isolated and spread throughout the facility on orders of the
Department of State Security.
