HAVANA, June 23 (Oswaldo de Céspedes, CPI) Alcoholism is on the increase in the small town of Cabañas, west of Mariel. Starting in the early morning hours, the adepts can be seen lurking around the places that sell liquor, including minors who go through an obliging adult to
score some rum.
"Youth is not exempt from this phenomenon," says Professor Moisés Rodríguez Valdés. Some say alcoholism has taken root following the influx of foreign capital, which has resulted in Cubans exclusion from hotels, beaches and other venues reserved for
dollar-bearing tourists, a rise in the cost of living, and the further marginalization of ordinary Cubans.
