Offices Given Preference Over Operating Rooms In Cienfuegos Hospital

CIENFUEGOS, June 15 (Dr. Sunset Nogueras Rofes) - As the surgical units in the "Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima" Hospital in Cienfuegos deteriorate, administrators pour resources into remodeling and modernizing meeting rooms and offices.

The air conditioning equipment in the operating rooms is no longer able to maintain the required temperature for surgical procedures. As a result, surgeons and other operating room personnel sweat, contaminating the sterile field around the patient. In general, the warmer temperatures prove to be a fertile medium for bacteria. In addition, there have been reports of flies and cockroaches in the operating rooms. The rate of post operatory infection is up, especially during the warmer months.

In spite of these problems, which have not been addressed, construction is nearly finished on a new wing, complete with air conditioning system, for the care of foreign patients. These pay in dollars for their care, while Cubans don’t.
