HAVANA, June 9 (Eduardo G. Estrada, ANC) Well-known Cuban dissident Maritza Lugo Fernández expects her husband, political prisoner Rafael Ibarra Roque, to be released on condition that they both leave the country, according to statements Lugo made to Agencia Noticiosa de Cuba.
Lugo, recently released from prison herself, said "The motive of my release is a presumed pardon the government will grant my husband." She later added, however, "State Security told me that my husband will not be freed, but will be taken directly from Villa Marista (State
Security headquarters) to the airport, where we will all take a plane."
Lugo said the couple have been granted visas by member countries of the European Economic Community. She said: "In this government nothing is certain. Everything points to the pardon as a decision of the country, and as far as Im concerned all the legal steps have been taken. Now all
we can do is wait."
Lugos case as a prisoner of conscience has been denounced by Amnesty International.
