HAVANA, June 12 (Moraima Pires, Grupo de Trabajo Decoro) – A Cuban dissident was arrested by State Security agents on May 31 for presumably associating with known dissidents and collaborating with foreign intelligence services.
Juan Carlos Pollo Pérez, president of the Support Group of the Association of Independent Teachers of Cuba in the province of Havana City was taken to a Department of State Security safehouse in the Siboney subdivision, to be interrogated. He was released after 24 hours.
His interrogators asked him about his links to dissidents in Pinar del Río province and to foreign information agencies. The next day officials asked him to sign a document acknowledging his work with the information services, which Pollo refused to do.
Finally they issued him a warning for, according to the officials, "being a passive resister."
Pollo said that three days before he had also been arrested at home and taken to another safehouse in the El Cacahual district, in the outskirts of Havana. At that time, officials confiscated his identity card and made him sign a document confining him to his home. They later gave him his
identity card back after the second arrest.
