HAVANA, June The massive "marches of the combative people" organized by the Cuban government do not represent the will of the people at all, say many here, since assistance is obligatory.
Referring to the half-million-women march on Friday, June 2, which ended up in front of the U. S. Interests Section, at the "José Martí Anti-imperialist Plaza," several people told CPI that absence from the event would have meant demerits, a negative standing at work,
loss of priviledges or even earning the label of "untrustworthy."
For students, the situation is made very clear by a government slogan: "Universities are only for revolutionaries." Those who want to enter or to stay in them have to play by the rules, starting in the early years.
The marches have become a daily event for Cubans since the Elián affair started six months ago.
