SONGO, June 5 (Humberto Melo, Coordinador Oriental ANAIC) Six secondary school students were expelled last Thursday, June 1, for refusing to participate in the debate about the Elián González case sponsored by the school.
At least two of the students are related to activists in the emerging civil society movement. One is the son of independent agricultural cooperative member Juan Antonio San Emeterio and another is a cousin of Antonio Alonso, the president of the National Alliance of Independent Agriculturists.
The debates in question take place every morning and then later in the day 15 minute periods are taken to reaffirm the students condemnation of the rafter boys "kidnapping." The expelled students said they were bored listening to the same litany day after day.
They will not be able to return to class until their parents meet with school administrators and decide how to punish their childrens ideological mis-behaviour.
