SANTIAGO DE CUBA, June 1 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO) The beef ration assigned by the government to children under the age of 7 was changed to soy-enhanced ground meat in Sagua de Tánamo, in Holguín province.
On May 26 consumers were able to buy the beef substitute instead of the four ounces of beef to which they were formerly entitled.
The change provoked a public outcry. Some called the measure "outrageous" saying that "the children had been deprived of the only protein available to them under the rationing system."
One mother said, "Im not even going to bother to buy the little lump of soy ground meat, but this is a measure of how unstable and devastated the economy is." Another said, "This is how they keep Cuban families in the worst poverty."
