HAVANA, July 20 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) A shotgun blast left Jorge Luis Alonso Arce in critical condition with 40 pellets in his neck after what seemed like a routine stop by police.
The officers stopped Alonso in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos province, as he was walking back from the local swamp where he was making charcoal.Alonso says he heard someone shout Halt! and another voice say: "If he moves, shoot to kill."
Alonso says he stood still, but nonetheless was shot by officer Silvio Pared. Alonso moonlighted in the swamp making charcoal to supplement the income from his regular job as a watchman in a mechanics shop. He is married and has two minor children.
The government forbids Cubans to make charcoal here, because the region is considered rice planting grounds.
