SANTIAGO DE CUBA, July 2 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) Neighbors of the Venceremos district here say when it comes to violence, they dont fear the outlaws, but the chief of police, Lt. Laudelino Carbonell.
Few wanted their names used in this story for fear of reprisals. One of them, Eduardo Álvarez was walking with his wife Ismeri Hierrezuelo on the night of June 25, when Lieutenant Carbonell stopped his car and asked them what they were doing in the street at that hour.
Álvarez told him to leave them alone, to which the lieutenant reacted by jumping out of his car and beating Álvarez up, leaving him with a head wound. By this point some of the neighbors had been awakened and started yelling "Bully, bully." The officer got in his patrol
car and hurriedly left the scene.
A few days later Lieutenant Carbonell summoned Álvarez to the police station and threatened to jail him for "social dangerousness" if he denounced the beating.
Carbonell has been repeteadly accused before the Ministry of the Interior, says Álvarez, but so far has never been sanctioned.
