Handicapped street peddler fined, threatened

CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba - January 29 (Luis Esteban Espinosa / www.cubanet.org) - A police captain known locally only as Claudio imposed a fine of 400 pesos -almost two months' salary- on a wheel-chair bound handicapped street peddler.

Maikel Marrero said police confiscated all his merchandise, consisting of knick-knacks which he sells for a living in the town of Buenaventura, Holguín province. Street peddlers such as these are illegal in Cuba.

Marrero also said the captain threatened to impose a fine of 1000 pesos if he continued selling from his wheel chair.
