CubaNet founder Rosa Berre passed away October
19
MIAMI, October 19 (www.cubanet.org) -
Rosa Berre, founder and editor in chief
of CubaNet, passed away Thursday morning
in her Miami home.
Overcoming the illness that consumed her,
Berre did not quit her post until the very
end. As late as last week, she was still
at her desk, sorting, editing, and organizing
articles and dispatches, despite her increasing
frailty and laborious breathing. To the
end, she wore a smile and was attentive
to all; no one ever heard her complain or
saw her out of sorts. Life was her favorite
song.
Berre's best epitaph is her life's work.
Her latest and last effort is CubaNet, which
she founded from her home in Virginia in
1994 with a group of friends and the support
of her husband, Cuban journalist Carlos
Quintela.
Berre once said: "CubaNet will exist
as long as there shall remain one independent
journalist in Cuba informing the world of
what happens in the country." CubaNet
is an organization dedicated to distributing
the work of the Cuban independent journalists,
to inform the world on Cuban affairs, and
to foster the development of a civil society
in Cuba.
Berre will live on in her work and in the
hearts of all who knew her. We will remember
the sound of her laughter and the life sparkling
in her eyes.
