Permits to rent to foreign lodgers could be rescinded

HAVANA, Cuba - July 5 (Juan Carlos Linares Balmaseda / www.cubanet.org) - After a meeting of representatives of the Popular Power focused on supposed problems created by Cubans renting rooms in their homes to foreign visitors, the discussion among those present turned to possibly rescinding permits that allow the rentals.

Critics say the measure would not change anything, since the number of Cubans engaged in the trade is minimal, due to what they call onerous taxes and regulations they are subject to.

Representatives at the meeting said the illustration of the alleged problems caused by the rentals was provided by the story of a house in Central Havana that provided "pornography services."
