Rats make unwelcome fellow travelers

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, July 7 (Rosa María Montoya, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - Virgilio Delat said a rat bit him on the train in which he was traveling between Santiago de Cuba and Havana.

Delat, an independent journalist, said the rat bit him in a toe and that public health authorities had put him under observation for 21 days after attending to his wound. As a result, he said, he cannot leave Havana.

The train connecting the two largest cities on the island, known as the French train, was once considered luxurious and promised to span the approximately 600 miles between them in 12 hours. Nowadays the trains run once every three days, departing at about 6:00 p.m. from each end of the route and often taking as long as 24 hours to complete the journey.

During the night, passengers say, rats and cockroaches have a field day in the unlit cars.
