Residents praise peddlers

RANCHUELO, Cuba, November 27 (Félix Reyes Gutiérrez, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Residents of Ranchuelo praised street peddlers in the municipality for supplying potatoes to consumers where the official distribution system fails.

The peddlers, who are self-employed and thus illegal, transport the potatoes in from Cienfuegos and Havana, and peddle them daily on top of hand carts in the streets. They typically pack the potatoes in different-sized containers priced at five, eight, and ten pesos.

The official food supply system has only offered for sale two pounds of potatoes per person since the beginning of the year.
