President of association for the deaf arrested

CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, April 14 (Luis Esteban Espinosa, Jóvenes sin Censura / www.cubanet.org) - Yoandy Quintana Sarría, president of the Independent Association of the Deaf, says he was forcefully arrested by the police last week.

Quintana Sarría, 22, who is deaf himself, said he was fined 500 pesos - the equivalent of a little more than the monthly average salary in Cuba - and threatened with four years imprisonment. He did not say under which charges he was fined or threatened. .

The arrest occurred April 6 and was carried by officers of the National Revolutionary Police who were in a police cruiser.

Quintana Sarría said they also confiscated two bicycle tires he owned.
