Czechs retaliate for diplomat expulsion

UPI, April 14, 2006.

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, April 14 (UPI) -- The Czech government has refused to extend the visa of a Cuban diplomat in Prague in retaliation for the expulsion of a Czech diplomat in Havana.

According to the Czech news agency CTK Stanislav Kazecky has denied Cuban charges he was spying for the United States and helping Cuban opposition groups by supplying them with money on behalf of the United States. Cuba also accused him of trying to enter and photograph military bases.

"According to my knowledge, I have never entered any army base, I have not photographed there and I have never had such an intention," Kazecky told CTK.

CTK said Kazecky will return home during the weekend.

It said the Czech government considers the decision of Cuban authorities not to extend Kazecky's visa as a sort of expulsion and in a reciprocal step, it refused to extend the visa to one of the Cuban diplomats in Prague.
