Prisoner put in solitary confinement after
wife falls ill
CAMAGUEY, Cuba, April 12 (Fernando Tabares
/ www.cubanet.org) - Dissident prisoner
Orencio Rafael Guerra Ramírez was
placed in solitary confinement last weekend
after demanding medical attention for wife,
who lost consciousness after falling ill
during a visit to the Cerámica Roja
prison, according to reports from another
prisoner.
René Montes de Oca Martij, general
secretary of the Cuban Pro Human Rights
Party, said in a note smuggled out of the
prison that the incident occurred April
9.
When Guerra Ramírez was unable to
revive his wife, Quirenia Padrón
Pérez, he asked State Security agents
to move her to the prison's infirmary or
to a hospital. When arrangements were being
made to take her to a hospital, the prisoner
was told the only means of transportation
was a cart pulled by a pair of oxen that
was used to haul garbage from the prison.
Guerra Ramírez started to shout
anti-government slogans and was taken to
a solitary confinement cell.
Hours later his wife was taken to the Amalia
Simoni Hospital. The note did not say what
type of transportation was used.
