Residents must pay for removal of debris from Hurricane Rita

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, September 26 (Niurvys Díaz Remond, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Residents in the Raúl Sancho district of Santa Clara were forced to buy gasoline for a state-owned truck for the removal of debris from Hurricane Rita.

The president of the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution on Marquito Héctor Fonseca Street visited all the houses one-by-one and asked the residents to contribute what could they since the truck had no fuel.

The cleanup crew had been on duty since 5 a.m. and the truck ran out of gasoline in the early afternoon.

Residents said they would rather have contributed to buying lunch for the workmen than gasoline for the truck since the workers had not stopped to eat.

Usually the workers assigned to cleanup are ex-prisoners who don't have jobs.
