The official press in Cuba does not publish
crime stories
SANTA CLARA, Cuba, September 27 (Ramón
González Abreu, Cubanacán
Press/www.cubanet.org) - Although there
has been a spate of murders and other crimes
in Santa Clara this past year, Granma and
other state media have been ignoring them.
However, the official press will publicize
crimes in the United States. The printed
press and radio stations present the crimes
as if they were unique to the United States.
Among the crimes ignored were the deaths
of five persons all younger the 25 who were
killed at a social club in the Sirios district.
Others have been killed in crimes of passion
which have been ignored by the media.
Each weekend internal reports at local
hospitals indicate that one or two - and
even three - people have been killed at
street celebrations. Often thieves will
kill their victims.
It's a rare day when someone is not assaulted
near the Augusto César Sandino baseball
stadium.
Such is the violence in Santa Clara that
the provincial office of the Communist Party
has formed patrols joint patrols with the
police in areas of high crime.
Not even the dead are safe. An employee
at one of the cemeteries reports that thieves
have been opening caskets and stealing jewels
and other valuables from the corpses.
