Independent journalist fined for living in family home

HAVANA, Cuba, September 22 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - Independent journalist Amarilis Cortina Rey has been fined for allegedly living illegally in the house her grandfather purchased in 1924 and where she herself was born.

Cortina Rey inherited the property from her father, who was also born there, but she lived elsewhere for a while before taking possession of the family home.

She was fined after an official of the municipal identity card office visited the house and inquired about her living status. She was unable to produce a deed to the house in her name.

"I haven't been able to put the house in my name because of bureaucratic problems at the Municipal Housing office," she said. "Two years ago I was also cited and fined for the same reason."
