Physical education professor fired for being a pacifist

HOLGUÍN, Cuba, September 15 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - Solenni Abad, a 29-year-old physical education professor at the Instituto Pre Universitario Antonio López Fernández, has lost his job because he's a pacifist and human rights advocate.

Abad said he was told September 8 that he could no longer teach at the Instituto in Moa, Holguín province, nor any other school because his views were not in line with those of the Cuban revolution.

Abad blamed his dismissal on militants of the Communist Party, who he said also prevented his sister, Zoraida, 26, from studying at the Instituto.

"My sister and I live in a house that falling apart," Abad said. "I live in one part and she lives in another, but she has nothing to do with my activities nor how I think."

Abad is a member of the Oriental Democratic Alliance, a human rights group.
