Wife rejects offer of prison facilities for conjugal visit

CAIBARIÉN, Cuba, September 19 (Alexander Francisco García Mujica, Villa Blanca Press / www.cubanet.org) - The wife of political prisoner Jorge Luis González Tanquero decided prison officials were making fun of her and decided to forgo a conjugal visit with her husband last week..

Officials at the Mangas prison at Bayamo, in Granma province, had told Marlene González Conesa beforehand that she'd have 12 hours in the conjugal facilities for her September 10 visit, which fell on her birthday.

But after making the 100-mile trip to the prison, she was told that it would be impossible to see her husband. Finally, the prison chief, a man named Moré, authorized a three-hour visit.

"This was all premeditated and designed to make fun of me and my husband," she said.

She left without seeing her husband, who was arrested in the crackdown of 2003 and is serving a 20-year sentence.
