Observer: Cuba lucre
Financial
Times, UK, September
13 2005.
Investing in a Cuba without Fidel Castro
is a long game. El Comandante has seen 11
US presidents come and go.
Still, anticipating a lifting of the US
embargo on Cuba and possible reconstruction
of the country optimistic investors are
already pushing up the share prices of any
companies that might benefit, say those
keeping a close eye on the situation.
Thomas Herzfeld, a Miami-based adviser
who specialises in closed-end funds, is
also ready for the Cuban revival. He has
registered with the Securities and Exchange
Commission a Cuba fund, which will invest
in Cuban companies and US companies that
do a lot of business in Cuba.
Herzfeld expects the fund will raise several
hundred million dollars.
No doubt all those expatriate Cubans will
be big investors.
