Cuba Wants To Be COMINAC
Chairman Earlier

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- Cuba
has requested to be the Chairman of Conference
of the Ministers of Information of Non-Aligned
Countries (Cominac) earlier than scheduled.
Information Ministry Secretary-General
Datuk Siti Balkish Mohamed Shariff said
Sunday Cuba wanted to take over the Cominac
Chair next year in conjunction with its
upcoming position as Chairman of the Non-Aligned
Movement (NAM) next year.
Cuba will be hosting the NAM Summit middle
of next year and thus hold the chairmanship
until 2009. Malaysia is the current Chairman
of NAM while its chairmanship for Cominac
VI ends 2008.
"I have told Cuba senior officials
who raised the matter at the meeting that
we could discuss about their request,"
she told reporters after chairing the two-day
Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) of the Cominac
VI at the Palace of the Golden Horses, here.
The SOM ended here today.
Malaysia, she said, felt that it wanted
to carry out the NAM News Network (NNN)
project properly first before handing over
its Cominac VI chairmanship.
NNN is an initiative proposed by Malaysia
towards the free flow of information among
member countries and between them and the
rest of the world.
The proposal received good support from
member countries at the SOM and it will
be forwarded for further deliberation at
the two-day ministerial meeting which begins
tomorrow.
"We have commitment. We want to carry
out the NNN project successfully. Then only
we may let go the chairmanship, even before
the terms ends.
"If possible, we want to hold the
chairmanship for at least two years and
after we have put NNN in operation and gain
some achievements, Cuba may take over (the
chairmanship) from there," Siti Balkish
said.
