Bronze ornaments stolen from the tomb of
a former president's parents
HAVANA, Cuba - June 28 (Reinaldo Cosano
Alén, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org)
- The bronze door-handles and chains that
decorated the tomb of the parents of former
Cuban president Fulgencio Batista were stolen
last week at the cemetery in Banes, Holguín
province.
Batista was born in Banes, and his parents.
Belisario Batista (1871 - 1931) and Carmen
Zaldívar (1886 - 1916) are buried
there.
Presumably, the metal items were taken
to be sold at a government-operated recycling
facility. The theft of any items that could
conceivably be sold from tombs has been
a not uncommon occurrence lately in Cuban
cemeteries.
The Batista-Zaldívar tomb was built
in the 1930s, according to the construction
contract, and was commissioned and paid
for by Rafael Díaz Balart, then an
attorney for the United Fruit Company residing
in Banes.
