Medical transportation unavailable for distressed
two-year-old
RANCHUELO, Cuba - June 28 (Félix
Reyes Gutiérrez, Cubanacán
Press / www.cubanet.org) - When the Ranchuelo
municipal polyclinic's doctor decided a
two-year-old patient needed an emergency
transfer to a hospital in the provincial
capital Wednesday night, no transportation
could be found among the customary emergency
services.
The minor, Diago Roque Gómez, presented
at the polyclinic with frequent vomiting
and diarrhea. Doctor Suyén Martínez,
after a brief examination, ruled the child
should go to the José Luis Miranda
pediatric hospital in Santa Clara.
Martínez called for transportation
and found out the ambulance was not in working
order and that two cars that are supposed
to back up the ambulance where nowhere to
be found that night.
Martínez then called the local office
of the Party and was told the drivers were
off duty. She appealed to the municipal
government and was not able to reach anyone.
The local station of the National Police
told her "We don't have any cars available."
Dr. Martínez then called the director
of the municipal health department, who
offered to use her own car to transport
Gómez.
The minor was admitted to the hospital
upon his eventual arrival, after 10 bouts
of vomiting.
