Teenaged girls sentenced to prison for prostitution
CIEGO DE ÁVILA, Cuba - June 30
(Roberto Pérez, Agencia Patria /
www.cubanet.org) - Two teenaged girls have
been sentenced to prison terms of three
and four years for "social endangerment,"
a catchall to cover prostitution.
Acela López García, 16, and
another teenager identified only as Ania,
18, had been deported from Havana where
they had been charged with prostitution.
The pair were tried in an open court, a
rarity in Cuba. An estimated 70 persons
witnessed the trial.
Felipe Torres, a member of the dissident
Cuban Foundation of Human Rights, said the
pair were being held at a special prison
named Aguacate in Camaguey.
