Resident of the U.S. jailed for giving his travel documents to his brother

HAVANA, Cuba, June 9 (Roberto Santana Rodríguez / www.cubanet.org) - Bernardo Heredia Pérez, a 42-year-old Cuban resident of the United Status, is being held in jail because he gave his travel documents to his younger brother, who used them to fly out of Cuba.

It is not known where Heredia Pérez lived in the United States nor what type of passport he was using.

Heredia Pérez told visitors to the prison where he's being held that he's in limbo because the Cuban authorities say he can't leave without travel documents. He has lived in the United States since 1994.

"I don't regret helping my brother obtain his freedom," Heredia Pérez said. "The bad part is the situation in which I find myself. In any other country I'd be fined or deported."

His brother left Cuba in March.
